SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

Children must be baptized and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation prior to receiving First Communion. If your child is in the second grade or older, and you are requesting the Sacrament of Baptism, please follow up with the Religious Education Office. Baptism classes are offered on the Second Sunday of the month at 9:45 a.m. in the library. For further information, please contact Rhonda Wigger, the Parish Coordinator at: 615-338-3901.

First Reconciliation

“The whole power of the sacrament of Penance consists in restoring God’s grace and joining us with him in an intimate friendship.” Reconciliation with God is thus the purpose and effect of the sacrament. For those who receive the Sacrament of Penance with contrite heart and religious disposition, Reconciliation is usually followed by peace and serenity of conscience with strong spiritual consolation.

First Eucharist

“Jesus took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them saying, “This my body which will be given for you; do this in memory of me.” Luke 22:19

First Communion is a new step into intimacy with Jesus. From Baptism, a first communicant has been one with Jesus, filled with the risen Lord’s indestructible life as part of his very Body, the Church. Taking a place at his table marks a new stage in the relationship with Christ, a conscious willingness to let the Lord nourish and nurture what began at Baptism. We are all part of this nourishing.

First Eucharist Preparation at Our Lady of the Lake

The Sacrament of Eucharist is not meant to be celebrated once, but over and over for a lifetime! The Eucharist is a sacrament we can receive every day after our First Communion. First Communion continues your child’s initiation into God’s family. To keep us fed, strengthened, and nourished for God’s special mission, God invites all of us to Mass each Sunday to play a special part in the Eucharist.

Children are prepared for their First Reconciliation and First Communion during their 1st and 2nd grade Religious Education classes. Children are required to attend both years, to be fully ready to receive the Sacraments. Children will then receive both sacraments in the Second grade. During the second grade, parents and guardian will attend meeting specifically addressing their role and the preparation program for their child. A separate program is available for children in grade 3 or higher who have not yet celebrated these Sacraments.

Confirmation

The Catechism describes Confirmation as a deepening of baptismal gifts. It says that the sacrament roots us more deeply in our own identity as God’s children, unites us more firmly with Christ, increases in us the gifts of the Holy Spirit, binds us more closely to the Church, and gives us special strength to bear witness to our faith. (see 1303). Confirmation is a deepening of our Christian identity.

All students wishing to be confirmed in the 8th grade should have 2 years of Religious Education immediately, prior to being confirmed, either at a Catholic School or parish religious education program to be confirmed in the 8th grade. During the eighth grade, parents, confirmands, and sponsors will attend two meetings specifically addressing their role for their child receiving Confirmation.

Confirmation is a continuation of the Catholic faith learning experience. Students are encouraged to attend Life-Teen after Confirmation.

In the sacraments, we can touch Jesus and be renewed. God’s plan of salvation is to unite us to himself, share his divine life, and restore us to union with himself for all eternity.

This is a special and exciting time as parents, guardians, catechists, and the parish assist the children in their faith journey.

May our hunger for the gift of God increase as we work together to build His kingdom as a faith community.
